Heading up the mountain for the Clan Gunn AGM at Grandfather Mountain Highland Games? Whether it’s your first trip or you’re a seasoned Games-goer, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your time on the mountain — from parking strategy to what to pack, plus special notes on the AGM, alcohol policy, and the Opening Ceremony.
1. Be an Early Bird
Getting on the mountain early makes all the difference.
- Driving up with a parking pass? Aim to arrive by 9 am — parking fills up fast.
- Setting up tents? Gates open at 7 am, and that’s when tent setup typically begins each morning.
- Riding the shuttle bus up the mountain? Be at the shuttle stop between 8 and 9 am — the earlier, the better.
Parking recommendations:
- If rain is in the forecast, park at Avery High School, which has paved parking.
- If the weather looks clear, Linville parking is the closest option.
2. Be Prepared
A little planning goes a long way once you’re on the mountain for the day.
What to bring:
- Folding chairs (public seating is limited, and Clan tents don’t have enough chairs for everyone)
- Sunscreen
- Rain gear
- A backpack or bag to carry your gear — there are plenty of great vendors, and you’ll want a way to haul your finds
- Cash for food — most food vendors take cards, but not all of them do
A note for shuttle riders: Space on the shuttle is limited, so pack light and plan accordingly.
3. AGM Preparation
Our AGM will be held at the Games on Saturday at 4 pm, in the large Heritage tent located downhill from our Clan tents.
- If you’re coming up via shuttle, plan to park in the Linville parking lot at the base of the mountain.
- We’re working with the Games organizers to arrange a special shuttle for Gunn members after the AGM wraps up.
- Coming up on Friday? Stop by the tent to check in and confirm shuttle details.
- Note: No parking is available on the mountain for the AGM unless you already have a parking pass.
4. Alcohol at GMHG
There are no alcohol sales on the mountain during the Games — no beer tent, and no vendor sales. Glenmorangie offers tastings but is not permitted to sell.
That said, most Clan tents offer members and guests a sample taste, and the Clan Gunn tent is no exception:
- We’ll have whiskey available for tasting.
- Feel free to bring a bottle to share — we keep it to tastings, not “drinking.”
- You’re welcome to bring alcohol up the mountain for personal consumption — just please be responsible.
5. Opening Ceremony
The Opening Ceremony takes place Thursday night at sundown, running roughly from 8 pm to 10 pm.
- Parking on the mountain for the ceremony is by pass only.
- Shuttle buses run from Avery High School starting at 3 pm, with the last shuttle off the mountain at 10:30 pm.
- The field opens at 4 pm and closes after the ceremony ends.
- Get there early — it fills up!
What to bring:
- Warm clothing (it gets cold on the mountain at night)
- Rain gear
- A flashlight (it gets dark)
Before the Calling Ceremony, enjoy other activities including the Campers’ Parade, sheep dog demonstrations, and more. Most vendors are open from 4 pm to 8 pm, making this a great window for shopping.
